The Last Mile Between Knowing and Doing

Information has never been easier to reach, and action has not become equally easy. We can read about writing without publishing, study business without selling, and understand health while living against our own notes. The problem is not always a lack of knowledge. It is an incomplete connection between knowledge and behaviour.

Recognition creates a dangerous feeling of completion. An idea sounds familiar, so we assume it has been integrated. But familiarity is not capability. Learning becomes visible only when it changes what you can notice, decide, or reliably do in reality.

Knowledge has a last mile#

A parcel can cross a country and still fail to reach the front door. Knowledge has the same final problem. It can travel from research to a book, from a book to your notes, and from your notes into memory. None of those movements guarantees that it will arrive in a Tuesday afternoon decision.

• The next action may be unclear.
• The skill underneath the idea may be missing.
• The action may feel socially or emotionally risky.
• The environment may keep rewarding the old response.
• The new behaviour may threaten an identity you still protect.

These are different breaks in the last mile. Another article cannot solve all of them. Sometimes you need a smaller action. Sometimes you need practice with feedback. Sometimes you need to change the room, the people, or the consequence surrounding the behaviour.

Convert ideas into experiments#

The useful unit of learning is not the idea you saved. It is the behaviour the idea can now change.

An experiment protects you from the demand to perform. Its purpose is not to prove that you are already competent. Its purpose is to produce information that the next attempt can use. This makes action smaller, feedback faster, and identity less exposed.

Stop using information as emotional shelter#

Research can protect us from the embarrassment of beginning. It lets us feel serious without becoming visible. The cure is not anti-intellectualism. It is a more demanding respect for knowledge: if an idea matters, give it a body, a date, and a situation in which it can fail usefully.

Information becomes part of a life only after something passes through the doorway.
